The Science of Imagination, 2014-2016

Medieval and Early Modern Middle East scientific manuscripts were composed of hand-drawn images, diagrams, and geometrical shapes as well as textual and mathematical explanations. Each page of these manuscripts often separated images and texts through both structured compositions and random layouts. Sometimes commentators penned their thoughts as marginalia, thereby initiating a dialog with both the author and the future fellow reviewers. These kinds of visual experiments can be read as a form of image making, which was closely intertwined with transmission of knowledge.

The Science of Imagination series aims to shed light on compositional aspects of the Islamic scientific manuscripts in Medieval and Early Modern periods in Europe. In various media ranging from screen-print and watercolor to ink and collage, my mixed-media prints are composed of many individual pages of different sizes and use images and layouts of the medieval and early modern scientific manuscripts.
