Virtual Reality: Healing Garden, After Alhambra Palace in Granada

Healing Garden, Collaborative Virtual Reality Project, 2017
Healing Garden, 2017, is a collaborative Virtual Reality project. I digitally reconstructed the medieval medicinal botanical garden after the Alhambra Palace’s garden in Andalusia, Spain and a 3-d model was made based on my design. Andalusia was the birth place of The Herbal of al-Ghafiqi botanical manuscript. The manuscript was composed by the 12th century Andalusian physician and scholar Abu Ja`far al-Ghafiqi. This is one of the most remarkable medieval botanical manuscripts on medicinal plants, their names, their visuals and their healing properties. The black silhouettes of the plants are modeled after my screen-printed images on paper, which were inspired by the manuscript’s botanical illustrations. People, entering the VR Healing Garden environment, take the black medicinal plants and arrange them in the plants’ beds to create a virtual healing garden as a metaphor for connecting to nature and natural medicine.

Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. It was originally constructed as a small fortress in AD 889 on the remains of Roman fortifications, and then largely ignored until its ruins were renovated and rebuilt in the mid-13th century by the Nasrid emir Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar of the Emirate of Granada, who built its current palace and walls. It was converted into a royal palace in 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada. The below photos are taken in August of 2017, when I traveled to Granada and saw the palace for the first time.
